Rheem HWCs - residential & commercial solutions
Hot Water Guy repairs, replaces and highly recommends Rheem hot water cylinders. For over 60 years, Rheem has been designing and manufacturing quality storage solutions in New Zealand. They offer the best warranties and selection to suit most budgets, homes, and business applications. We can also extend its life expectancy by servicing your cylinder every five years.
Whether you’re after a low or mains-high-pressure hot water cylinder, we’ll find one to suit your needs. In addition to Rheem, we offer excellent savings on Rinnai’s range of water heaters and provide expert advice on compatible energy-efficient heating alternatives, such as gas califonts, heat pump water heaters, and solar systems.
Tauranga’s Hot Water Guy goes the extra mile to ensure you comply
We specialise in hot water systems and offer affordable, tailor-made solutions. This includes upgrading your existing hot water cylinder to meet current regulations. We fit seismic restraints and tempering valves, which aren’t present in many older HWCs. We also ensure everything fits like it should, including through the closet door.
One common misconception we like to address is that a drip tray isn’t mandatory when retrofitting or installing a new cylinder into an existing home – only in new builds. The reason is that it can be difficult to get a 40mm waste pipe drain from the tray to the external envelope of a building. Sometimes, it is an option; if it is, our team will ask if you’d like one installed.
Does your HWC comply? Enjoy peace of mind and a Master Plumbers guarantee you can rely on.
Trust Hot Water Guy to give you sound, honest advice.
Unlike hot water cylinders made in the 1970s, which lasted decades, household tanks have a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years. Valves’ manufacture warranties are two years; servicing or replacement is generally required after five.
Over time, you can experience water leaks, faulty relief or Apex valves (pressure reducing valves), temperature loss, and rust or corrosion. But don’t worry – whatever the problem; our team works quickly to evaluate it and advise whether replacing your hot water cylinder is the right course of action.

The hot water cylinder is often overlooked when it comes to maintenance. You probably never think about it until you notice a wet spot on the carpet or no hot water. At Hot Water Guy, we recommend a five-yearly service by professionals to extend the life of your system. Besides this, you can follow our DIY guidelines below:
Empty the tank: Drain the water from your cylinder (sometimes called a geyser tank or boiler) to prevent sediment from building up and reducing your hot water system’s efficiency.
Check temperature: You can easily check the temperature by running a thermometer under your hot water tap. Ideally, it should be around 55℃. If it’s hotter, you waste money by overheating your water and straining the cylinder. The code requirement is for 55-degree water from the tap and 62 degrees minimum in the HWC. The code requirement is changing shortly to 50 degrees from the tap, and remains at a 62 degrees minimum in the HWC.
Release the temperature pressure relief valve (TPR): This relief valve is a built-in safety mechanism that prevents your tank from bursting and flooding your property. It is near the top of your hot water cylinder and should be released every six months.
Check the anode rod: This rod in your tank is a solid bar that reduces corrosion within your hot water cylinder. It can degrade over time, leaving your tank susceptible to rust.
If you don’t want to tackle these tasks, contact the Hot Water Guy. Our plumbing team is Tauranga’s hot water specialist.
Benefits of an electric hot water cylinder in your Tauranga home
Unsurprisingly, electric hot water cylinders are common in homes and businesses across New Zealand. Besides being tried and tested technology, your new replacement offers the following benefits:
- Cheaper upfront costs: Standard electric hot water systems are still the most affordable water heaters to purchase and install.
- Outdoor hot water cylinders: Some Rinnai and Rheem models can be installed outside, giving you more space inside.
- Save power while away: Reduce your energy bill by turning your hot water off when you plan on being away. It’s as easy as flipping a switch on the wall.
- Flexible water storage options: We size your replacement hot water cylinder to suit your household requirements, so there’s always plenty of water.
- Future-proofing options: If we replace your hot water cylinder, we can ensure it is ready for more sustainable heating solutions in the future.
